This use case examines the application of the MP5990 hot-swap solution for 5G telecom.

The MP5990 is a fully integrated, 50A hot-swap solution that can optimize power delivery for 5G telecom using a PMBus interface, in addition to providing rich protections such as input voltage (VIN) over-voltage protection (OVP), output current (IOUT) over-current protection (OCP), short-circuit protection (SCP), and over-temperature protection (OTP).

The transition to 5G telecom offers significant improvements in cellular technology across latency, speed, and capacity for connected devices. Traditional hot-swap power modules struggle to support these advanced features of 5G telecom, which require higher current ratings and faster power delivery, particularly during rapid changes in power consumption. A robust power protection solution is another important consideration for 5G telecom, as short circuits, surges, and voltage fluctuations can lead to costly downtime and damage to 5G datacenters and base stations.

The MP5990’s PMBus interface enables dynamic power management by controlling key parameters in real time, based on factors such the traffic load and switching between different power states. The MP5990 is available in an LGA-45 (5mmx7mm) package.
