Optimized Performance with MPS Inductor

The MP2651 is a buck-boost charger IC designed for battery packs with 1 cell to 4 cells in series. It can accept a wide 4V to 22V input voltage (V_IN) range to charge the battery. The buck-boost topology allows the battery voltage (V_BATT) to be above or below V_IN.

While the input is present, the MP2651 operates in charge mode. It measures V_BATT and charges the battery with four phases: constant current trickle charge, constant current pre-charge, constant-current fast charge, and constant voltage charge. Other features include charge termination and auto-recharge.

The MP2651 integrates the input current (I_IN) limit and V_IN limit to avoid overloading the input power source. This is compliant with USB and PD specifications. In source mode, the device can supply a wide 3V to 21V V_IN range, and has an output current (I_OUT) limit with a high resolution.

The I²C/SMBus interface can configure the charge and discharge parameters in source mode: I_IN limit, V_IN limit, charge current, battery-full regulation voltage, output voltage (V_OUT), and I_OUT. The device can also use the registers to provide information on statuses and faults. Full protection features include input over-voltage protection (OVP), battery OVP, CFLR OVP, thermal shutdown, and a configurable timer to prevent prolonged charging of a dead battery. The device also limits the die temperature to a configurable threshold to guarantee safe operation.

The MP2651 is available in a TQFN-30 (4mmx5mm) package.
