The MP2651 is a buck-boost charger IC designed for battery packs with 1 cell to 4 cells in series. It can accept a wide 4V to 22V input voltage (VIN) range to charge the battery. The buck-boost topology allows the battery voltage (VBATT) to be above or below VIN.
While the input is present, the MP2651 operates in charge mode. It measures VBATT and charges the battery with four phases: constant current trickle charge, constant current pre-charge, constant-current fast charge, and constant voltage charge. Other features include charge termination and auto-recharge.
The MP2651 integrates the input current (IIN) limit and VIN limit to avoid overloading the input power source. This is compliant with USB and PD specifications. In source mode, the device can supply a wide 3V to 21V VIN range, and has an output current (IOUT) limit with a high resolution.
The I2C/SMBus interface can configure the charge and discharge parameters in source mode: IIN limit, VIN limit, charge current, battery-full regulation voltage, output voltage (VOUT), and IOUT. The device can also use the registers to provide information on statuses and faults. Full protection features include input over-voltage protection (OVP), battery OVP, CFLR OVP, thermal shutdown, and a configurable timer to prevent prolonged charging of a dead battery. The device also limits the die temperature to a configurable threshold to guarantee safe operation.
The MP2651 is available in a TQFN-30 (4mmx5mm) package.

The EV2651-VT-00A is an evaluation board designed to demonstrate the capabilities of the MP2651, a buck-boost charger IC designed for battery packs with 1 cell to 4 cells in series. The device can accept a wide 4V to 22V input voltage (VIN) range to charge the battery. It also supplies a wide 3V to 21V voltage range at the IN pin in source mode. This function is compliant with USB PD specifications.
When input power is present, the board charges the battery with a maximum 6A charge current. When source mode is enabled, the device has an output current (IOUT) limit up to 6A.
With the I2C/SMBus interface, the MP2651 can flexibly configure the charge and discharge parameters. The I2C interface can also provide the device and fault statuses through the registers.
