Three or more series cells are typically used for battery packs in applications with much higher discharge power requirements such as notebook computers, large wireless speakers, robot vacuums, power tools, industrial, and battery backup systems. MPS offers several different charger topologies for 3s applications depending on the input power source type and max charging current needed. For non-USB applications such as industrial equipment, it is most cost-effective to use a charger IC with buck topology, since the adapter’s output voltage can always be selected to be higher than the maximum battery voltage. For these applications, MPS offers fully-integrated buck charger ICs capable of up to 36V operating voltage and charging up to 6 series cells. For higher power USB-C Power Delivery (USB PD) applications, a charger with buck-boost topology is needed since legacy 5V USB adapters must be supported in addition to up to 20V USB PD. USB PD applications can take advantage of MPS’s industry-leading power density with our integrated FET buck-boost chargers capable of delivering up to 6A of charge current.
