The MP5998 is a fully integrated, PMBus-compatible, compact hot-swap protection device. It contains a hot-swap controller and a high-side power MOSFET (HS-FET), which allows it to operate as a standalone device. The MP5998 can also operate in parallel for high-current applications. It can achieve up to 60A of continuous output current (I_OUT) per device at room temperature. 

The device limits the backplane voltage drop by limiting the inrush current to the load while a circuit card is inserted into a live backplane power source. It limits the internal MOSFET current (I_FET) by controlling the gate voltage (V_GATE) via the current limit (I_LIMIT) reference input and soft-start (SS) ramp.  

The MP5998 provides many features to simplify system design, such as an integrated current mirror to monitor I_OUT and integrated on-die temperature-sensing. This eliminates the need for an external current-sense power resistor, power MOSFET, and temperature-sense device.

Rich fault protections include input voltage (V_IN) over-voltage protection (OVP), I_OUT over-current protection (OCP), short-circuit protection (SCP), and over-temperature protection (OTP). The device detects power MOSFET gate, source, and drain short conditions. The fault status can be indicated with the fault report output (FLTB).

The MP5998 also provides power good (PG) indication. The PMBus interface provides V_IN, input current (I_IN), input energy (E_IN), output voltage (V_OUT), I_OUT, input power (P_IN), and output power (P_OUT) telemetry. Fault monitoring and status reporting is achieved through the PMBus interface.

The MP5998 is available in a QFN-26 (5mmx4.5mm) package.
