This use case examines the application of the MP5493, MP5042, and MIE1W0505BGLVH in power meters.

MPS provides the MP5493, MP5042, and MIE1W0505BGLVH to control power surges, voltage transients, and sudden power outages in power meters.

Power meters measure key parameters of electrical power consumption in residential and commercial buildings, energy systems, manufacturing, and charging infrastructures. As efforts for energy efficiency and conservation ramp up, designers are integrating power-saving components in power meters, such as power management ICs (PMICs), voltage regulators, and low-power microcontrollers and analog front-end (AFE) circuits. However, these power-saving components have a lower capacity to handle voltage fluctuations, impacting overall power supply stability. MPS provides the MP5493, MP5042, and MIE1W0505BGLVH to control power surges, voltage transients, and sudden power outages in power meters.

The MP5493 is an energy backup and management unit that combines a DC/DC converter and a bidirectional DC/DC converter in a supercapacitor charger and boost topology. The device provides an energy management solution for the power line carrier (PLC) in power meters, allowing for uninterrupted power if a sudden outage occurs. In addition, the MP5493’s bidirectional converter achieves optimal energy transfer for the most cost-effective energy storage solution.

Additional features of the MP5493 include:

  • Wide 5V to 36V Operating Input Voltage (VIN) Range
  • Real-Time Input Shutdown Detection to Enable Boost Mode
  • Buck Converter:
    • 600mA Continuous Output Current (IOUT)
    • 600mΩ/320mΩ Internal Power MOSFETs
  • Bidirectional Converter for Supercapacitor Charger and Boost:
    • 600mΩ/320mΩ Internal Power MOSFETs
    • Adjustable Output from 1.2V for Supercapacitor Charger
  • Available in a TSOT23-8 Package

The MP5042 is an e-fuse with an adjustable current limit designed to protect circuitry on the output from transients on the input, as well as circuitry on the input from shorts and transients coming from the output. If an over-current condition or power surge occurs, the MP5042 automatically interrupts the current to prevent damage to the components or equipment. The MP5042 also provides protections such as over-current protection (OCP) with hiccup mode, and latch-off protection, thermal shutdown, and automatic retry.

Additional features of the MP5042 include:

  • Wide 4.2V to 28V Operating VIN Range
  • 200μA Low Quiescent Current (IQ)
  • 115mΩ Integrated MOSFET
  • Adjustable 25mA to 2A Current Limit (ILIMIT) or Fixed 260mA ILIMIT when the ILIMIT Pin is Floating
  • 3.3V and 5V Compatible Logic Supply
  • Configurable Soft-Start Time (tSS) via the DV/DT Pin
  • ±10% ILIMIT Accuracy at 260mA
  • Available in a TSOT23-6 Package

The MIE1W0505BGLVH is an ultra-small, highly reliable, cost-effective, isolated, DC to DC power module that can provide DC bias to the MP27631 to meet the required voltage levels of the components in power meters. The MIE1W0505BGLVH provides excellent load regulation and line regulation, and is available in an ultra-small LGA (4mmx5mm) package.

Additional features of the MIE1W0505BGLVH include:

  • 3V to 5.5V VIN Range
  • Selectable 5V and 3.3V Output
  • 2.5kVRMS Isolation Voltage
  • Maximum 1W Output Power (POUT)
  • Meets EN55032 Class B Emissions
