This use case considers the application of MPS’s highly integrated, narrow-voltage DC (NVDC) buck chargers in smart home devices.
With the increasing availability of wireless home appliances, smart homes are on the rise, integrating various connected devices (e.g. smart thermostats, alarms, smart speakers, and doorbells, as well as connected cameras) across automation, monitoring, and energy management functions. These devices are controlled and regulated from a centralized system, where it is important to maintain a constant power supply.
A battery pack is typically embedded in connected smart home devices. Otherwise, a backup battery is used in the case of AC power failure. If the battery becomes completely discharged, an input source is plugged in to supply power to the centralized system immediately. USB Type-C compliant chargers are commonly used in smart home devices.
The MP2722 is a 5A, USB Type-C 1.3 compliant, switch-mode battery charger that is designed for single-cell Li-ion or Li-polymer batteries. If the input source is connected and the system voltage (VSYS) drops below the battery voltage (VBATT), meaning the system is heavily loaded, the MP2722 offers supplement mode to enable the buck converter and battery to provide power to the system. The MP2722 also integrates a configuration channel (CC) controller and USB BC1.2, which simplifies application design.
Overall, the MP2722’s low-impedance power path optimizes battery charging efficiency as well as battery life during discharging.
