This use case examines the application of the MP2722 narrow-voltage DC (NVDC) charger in point-of-sale (POS) terminals.
The MP2722 battery charger IC is a 5A, switch-mode battery management device for single-cell Li-ion or Li-polymer batteries that provides protections — including under-voltage protection (UVP), over-voltage protection (OVP), and thermal regulation — to minimize the likelihood of battery failure in POS terminals.
POS terminals (including portable POS and mobile POS) are electronic devices that deliver payment transactions in fast-paced settings like retail stores, healthcare, restaurants, and transportation. Compared to traditional cash registers, POS terminals provide improved security and efficiency, in addition to data collection. High reliability and quick processing speeds for payment transactions are crucial to manage checkout times as well as customer satisfaction. Battery failure in POS terminals is a potential disruption that leads to productivity loss, inconveniences customers, and in the worst-case scenario, lost business.
The device’s NVDC power management structure also provides a low-impedance power path that offers advantages across charging efficiency, battery charging time, and battery life during discharging.
