The MP2652 is a buck-boost charger IC designed for battery packs with 2 cells to 5 cells in series. The device can accept a wide 4V to 22V input voltage (V_IN) range to charge the battery. The buck-boost topology allows the battery voltage (V_BATT) to be above or below V_IN.

When the input is present, the MP2652 operates in charge mode. It measures the V_BATT and charges the battery with four phases: constant-current trickle charge, constant-current pre-charge, constant-current fast charge, and constant-voltage charge. Other features include charge termination and auto-recharge.

The MP2652 also integrates an input current (I_IN) limit and V_IN limit to avoid overloading the input power source. This is compliant with USB and power delivery (PD) specifications.

The MP2652 can also supply a wide voltage range (4V to 21V) at the input when source mode is enabled. The device also has an output current (I_{IN_SRC}) limit with a high resolution in source mode.

The I²C/SMBus interface can configure the charge and discharge parameters, including the I_IN limit, V_IN limit, charge current, and battery-full regulation voltage in charge mode, as well as the output voltage (V_{IN_SRC}) and I_{IN_SRC} in source mode. The MP2652 can also use the registers to provide information on statuses and faults.

To guarantee safe operation, the device limits the die temperature to a configurable threshold. Other safety features include input over-voltage protection (OVP), battery OVP, thermal shutdown, and a configurable timer to prevent prolonged charging of a dead battery.

The MP2652 is available in a TQFN-30 (4mmx5mm) package.
