The MBM16S-P50-x is a solution module for managing 7-cell to 16-cell series Li-ion battery packs.

This battery management board is based on the MP279x, a complete solution for battery monitoring and protection that provides internal cell balancing up to 58mA. This board also features the MPF4279x, an advanced battery fuel gauge (FG) that performs state-of-charge (SOC), time-to-full, time-to-empty, and unavailable energy estimation using a custom battery cell model provided by MPS.

The MBM16S-P50-x provides onboard high-side MOSFETs (HS-FETs) for controlling charge (CHG) and discharge (DSG) current. A full set of configurable hardware protection functions are available, including over-current protection (OCP), short-circuit protection (SCP), battery and cell over-voltage protection (OVP), battery and cell under-voltage protection (UVP), over-temperature (OT) protection, and under-temperature (UT) protection. If a hardware protection occurs, configurable thresholds on the control board can control the CHG and DSG MOSFETs.

The MBM16S-P50-x incudes a 1mΩ current-measuring shunt resistor used by the MP279x for current monitoring and Coulomb counting. An onboard microcontroller unit (MCU) manages the interface between the MP279x, MPF4279x, and user. Communication to the MBM16S-P50-x is available via an RS-232 interface. CAN bus, UART, and RS-485 communication interfaces are also available. A USB-based graphical user interface (GUI) provides easy set-up and evaluation.

The MBM16S-P50-x provides an onboard negative temperature coefficient (NTC) to monitor the board temperature that is connected to the MP279x’s NTC4 input. The MP279x includes three additional NTC inputs that are available for the user to connect their own 10kΩ NTCs. The user can configure beta values and the number of sensors via the MBM16s-P50-x GUI.
