Description

The MP2796 is a robust battery management device, providing a complete analog front-end (AFE) monitoring and protection solution. It is designed for multiple-cell series battery management systems (BMS). The device can support digital interface or SPI communication. It supports connections for 7-cell to 16-cell series battery packs, with an absolute voltage exceeding 80V on particular pins.

The MP2796 integrates two separate analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The first ADC measures each channel’s differential cell voltages (up to 16 channels), die temperature, and 4-channel temperatures via external NTC thermistors. The second ADC measures the charge/discharge current via an external current-sense resistor. When paired with an MPF4279x fuel gauge, the MP2796 can achieve a state-of-charge (SOC) error to within 2%. The MP2796 includes high-side MOSFET (HS-FET) drivers for charge and discharge control.

The discharge (DSG) MOSFET driver includes a configurable soft start (SS) that provides a controlled turn-on, eliminating the need for an external pre-charge circuit. The MOSFET drivers also incorporate over-current protection (OCP), short-circuit protection (SCP), battery under-voltage protection (UVP), battery over-voltage protection (OVP), and high-/low-temperature protection. All of these protections have configurable thresholds.

Internal passive balancing MOSFETs can be used to equalize mismatched cells, supporting up to 58mA. There is also the option to drive external balancing transistors (MOSFET or BJT).

The MP2796 is available in a TQFP-48 (7mmx7mm) package.

The EV2796-0000-FP-00A and EV2796-0002-FP-00A are evaluation boards designed to demonstrate the capabilities of the MP2796, a complete analog front-end (AFE) monitoring and protection IC. The MP2796 supports 7-cell to 16-cell series battery packs with outstanding current and voltage measurement accuracy and a complete set of protection features.

The MP2796 measures each cell’s voltage and includes high-side MOSFETs (HS-FETs) for charge and discharge control. It measures the die temperature and cell temperature via 4 negative temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistor inputs. The MP2796 contains internal passive-balancing MOSFETs capable of driving up to 58mA, and can also drive external balancing transistors for higher currents.

These evaluation boards combine the MP2796 with power MOSFETs and a current-sense resistor to support up to 70A of charge/discharge current. If needed, the EV2796-0000-00A and EV2796-0002-FP-00A include placeholders to add external MOSFETs for a higher balancing current.

The EV2796-0000-00A works with the MP2796DFP-0000 and supports I²C communication, while the EV2796-0002-FP-00A works with the MP2796DFP-0002 and supports SPI communication.
