This use case examines the application of the MCQ1823 in automotive load detection and management.

The MCQ1823 integrated Hall-effect current sensor offers high-accuracy Hall sensors for AC or DC current sensing and an ultra-small TQFN-12 (3mmx3mm) package to achieve improved performance as well as seamless integration into space-limited automotive load detection and management systems.

Vehicles are comprised of a number of critical systems including braking and steering, infotainment and lighting, engine and transmission, and heating and air conditioning. To prevent faults and overloading, these components require load and detection management that controls and monitors the vehicle’s overall electrical load. High current monitoring and small form factor in automotive load detection and management systems are at a premium to improve on traditional current sensors that are heavy, bulky, and become less accurate at higher currents.

Furthermore, the MCQ1823’s differential Hall array cancels out any stray magnetic field, providing immunity to external noise and disturbances in strenuous automotive environments. This linear Hall-effect current sensor also integrates over-current detection (OCD), with a fast 1µs response time.
