This use case examines the application of the MP4581, MP27631, MIE1W0505BGLVH, and MP5042 in the design of e-bikes.

MPS offers strategic power management solutions with the MP4581, MP27631, MIE1W0505BGLVH, and MP5042 to improve battery life and reliability in e-bike systems.

Efficient power management is crucial for e-bikes, which are comprised of a rechargeable battery system, a controller, and an integrated electric motor. While e-bikes offer additional power and various levels of assistance, riders also experience range anxiety and general concerns with relying on battery power and components that are subject to electrical disturbances. MPS offers strategic power management solutions with the MP4581, MP27631, MIE1W0505BGLVH, and MP5042 to improve battery life and reliability in e-bike systems.

The MP4581 is a high-efficiency, ultra-low quiescent current (IQ), synchronous step-down converter with integrated power MOSFETs. The converter regulates the battery voltage to achieve a stable power supply and increase the overall battery life of the e-bike.

Additional features of the MP4581 include:

  • 8V to 100V Input Voltage (VIN) Range
  • 1V to 30V Output Voltage (VOUT) Range
  • 15µA Typical IQ
  • 2µA Maximum Shutdown Current (ISD)
  • 100kHz to 1MHz Configurable Frequency
  • Available in an SOIC-8EP Package

The MP27631 is a quad-channel digital isolator that provides up to 5kVRMS of insulation voltage using capacitive isolation technology. Electrical isolation between the various components minimizes noise interference and ground loops, resulting in improved safety and reliability.

Additional features of the MP27631 include:

  • Supports DC to 150Mbps Data Rate
  • 2.5V to 5.5V VIN Range
  • >±100kV/μs Common-Mode Transient Immunity (CMTI)
  • High System-Level ESD, EFT, and Surge Immunity
  • 1.2kV Peak VIORM Working Insulation
  • Available in an SOICW-16 Package

The MIE1W0505BGLVH is an ultra-small, highly reliable, cost-effective, isolated, DC to DC power module that can provide DC bias to the MP27631 to meet the required voltage levels of the e-bike components. The MIE1W0505BGLVH provides excellent load regulation and line regulation, and is available in an ultra-small LGA (4mmx5mm) package.

Additional features of the MIE1W0505BGLVH include:

  • 3V to 5.5V VIN Range
  • Selectable 5V and 3.3V Output
  • 2.5kVRMS Isolation Voltage
  • Maximum 1W Output Power (POUT)
  • Meets EN55032 Class B Emissions

The MP5042 is an e-fuse with an adjustable current limit designed to protect circuitry on the output from transients on the input, as well as circuitry on the input from shorts and transients coming from the output. If an over-current condition or power surge occurs, the MP5042 automatically interrupts the current to prevent damage to the e-bike system. This is crucial to prevent potential damage to the battery management system, individual components, as well as the rider.

Additional features of the MP5042 include:

  • Wide 4.2V to 28V Operating VIN Range
  • 200μA Low IQ
  • 115mΩ Integrated MOSFET
  • Adjustable 25mA to 2A Current Limit (ILIMIT) or Fixed 260mA ILIMIT
  • Available in a TSOT23-6 Package
