Description
The MP5516N is a monolithic power management system designed to manage energy storage and backup release in enterprise solid-state drives (SSDs). It integrates a current-limited, reverse-current protected input power switch (e-fuse), an autonomous buck-boost energy storage and release converter, and storage capacitance (CSTRG) health monitoring.
The configurable storage voltage (VSTRG), backup release, and system output bus voltages enable flexible design. An onboard analog-to-digital converter (ADC) provides real-time monitoring of many power system parameters via the I2C.
The configurable input current limit switch (ILIMIT_E-FUSE) limits inrush current during system start-up. Reverse-current blocking prevents backup energy from flowing to the failing input source. The energy storage/release converter’s configurable switching frequency (fSW) and charging current optimizes the external component value and size tradeoffs in design.
Seamless energy release transition is achieved using the internal logic. Constant-on-time (COT) control in the buck topology ensures steady regulation during energy release. The buck-boost energy storage/release converter requires only a single inductor to operate.
Onboard multiple-time programmable (MTP) memory allows the user to store system operating parameters specific to a product assembly, such as the input current (IIN) limit, capacitor health check start and stop values, and discharge current. These parameters can be adjusted in system through the I2C interface. The onboard 8-bit ADC can be used to monitor the input voltage (VIN) and IIN in real time.
The MP5516N requires a minimal number of readily available, standard external components, and is available in a QFN-25 (4mmx4mm) package.
