Magnetic angle sensors are revolutionizing robotics. As robots transform many industries, from industrial manufacturing to the medical field, accurate position sensing is vital for sending the necessary information to the robotic controllers for accurate motion control. Traditional solutions to measure the angular position or speed of a rotating shaft is to use an optical encoder. Optical encoders can be expensive, can be large and bulky, and they require difficult manual adjustment of the “zero” position.

By removal of the optical component, these sensors allow up to a 90% reduction in solution size and can reduce cost by up to 80%.

These discrete optical components result in a complicated design process, large board size, and high BOM costs.

MPS’s MagAlpha angle sensors MA732 and MA734 are IC solutions that directly sense the angle of an external magnetic field. Using proprietary technology, these magnetic sensors measure the angle of the field with high accuracy even at a high rotational speed, providing absolute position accuracy by determining the angle position by sensing the rotating position of the rotation of the motor. By removal of the optical component, these sensors allow up to a 90% reduction in solution size and reduce cost by up to 80%.
