Low-Voltage Energy Storage
Low-Voltage Energy Storage Content
Description
A low-voltage, battery-based energy storage system (ESS) stores electrical energy to be used as a power source in the event of a power outage, and as an alternative to purchasing energy from a utility company. Having an ESS allows homeowners to store excess solar-generated electricity, providing flexibility in when they buy and sell electricity to the utility company, leading to significant cost savings, and also serving as a backup in case of utility company outages. Deployment of these systems is growing rapidly, driven by the growth in solar installations, the lower costs of large battery systems, and government incentives to encourage energy storage.
MPS’s advanced battery management solutions enable efficient and cost-effective low-voltage energy storage solutions. All of the battery cells within a low-voltage ESS must be carefully managed to ensure safe and reliable operation across a long operating life. This requires a high-performance battery management system (BMS). Our robust family of battery monitoring and protection devices provides a complete analog front-end (AFE) to accurately measure up to 16-series Li-ion battery cells. Most low-voltage ESS utilize battery stacks below 60V, comprised of 13 to 16 series cells producing between 3.6V and 4V each; therefore, a single 16-channel battery monitor is sufficient to meet the monitoring and protection requirements.
Complimenting MPS’s battery monitors, MPS’s fuel gauges offer comprehensive status information on all cells within an ESS battery pack. These devices estimate the internal state-of-charge (SOC) and state-of-health (SOH) for each cell, as well as the full pack. They also determine impedance, remaining runtime, charge time, and instantaneous available power. Fuel gauges can also compensate for cell capacity mismatch to extend battery runtime. MPS’s high-voltage, ultra-low current power supplies combined with our digital isolators with integrated, isolated power supplies provide a small, highly integrated, and highly reliable complete solution.
