Can someone explain the compensation circuit on the MP1584?  Everytime I run the DCDC designer, I get wildly different values for for C7 and R5 and I'd like to understand what it does so I can pick values that help what I am looking to accomplish.

Hi Robert,

 

The compensation of R5 sets the crossover frequency, and C7 sets the phase margin. Lower crossover frequency has slower transient response, and higher crossover frequency may cause system to be unstable. The good rule of thumb is to set it at 1/10th of the switching frequency. I would suggest you to follow Table 3 of the spec for common voltages. Detail description on how to select the compensation is also stated in the spec. (R5 and C7 in design model is equivalent to R3 and C3 in spec)
